Polar Bears, Belugas Galore - Hudson Bay |
A wildlife-viewing extravaganza: travel to the Polar Bear capitol of the world, Churchill, Manitoba, and on to the Seal River estuary for Polar Bears, Beluga whales, birds and more birds. En route to Churchill, you gain a sense of the immensity of the Barren Lands that stretch from Hudson Bay on the east to the MacKenzie River to the west – a stunning maze of rivers, lakes, ponds, and Boreal forest. From Churchill, we fly by floatplane to our luxury lodge at Seal River. Here, Beluga whales summer in large numbers to feed and refresh their hides on the gravelly riverbeds, and Polar Bear linger near shore where they frequently cool off in Hudson Bay’s waters.
Activities include zodiac marine tours to view beluga whales (even swim with them, if desired), seals, seabirds and polar bears, as well as informative walking and ATV tours to view and photograph Barren Land caribou, snowy owl, gyrfalcon, ptarmigan, seal, fox, pine martin, arctic hare, and possibly wolverine and wolf. A helicopter or floatplane tour will reveal more wildlife, as well as many historic Inuit remains. Take sunset paddle tours with literally hundreds of beluga whales, before returning to the lodge to view the spectacular Aurora Borealis.
Cap-off your expedition with a full day in Churchill to see the extraordinary Eskimo Museum, Parks Canada Interpretive Center, Fort Prince of Wales and more.
