Birding the Kiril Islands
The Kamchatka Peninsula and Kuril Islands are among the most geologically active and biologically rich areas in the world. The seas teem with avian and marine life. Alpine meadows and lowland forests host diverse and dense populations of flora and fauna. A symphony of fulmar, puffin, auklet and murre offer up a soundtrack for your exploration as you observe otter, gray whale, sea cow, fox, and much more. Look closely, that’s a Kamchatka brown bear on the shore, a Stellar sea eagle soaring overhead, and salmon migrating in crystal clear waters below.

Cruise up the Zhupanova River ever watchful for Yellow-billed Loon, Yellow-breasted Bunting, and Greenshank. A local salmon fishing camp invites us ashore. Observe as longtime fishermen harvest and process the native food, but don’t leave without sampling their product.

Come with us as we study the extraordinary biodiversity of the area, and get to know the people that call this wild outpost home.
